Garageband Practice and Assignment

Garageband Practice – Secret Agent or First Song

Hi, if you are using the older white Mac computers, you will be completing this activity.
To begin to get comfortable with Garageband, you will make a short sound clip, named, Secret Agent. Click Secretagent2011 for a typed copy of the tutorial, but it will be better if you follow along with the video tutorial below.  It will go over the basics of how to add sound loops, delete clips, extend them, adjust the volume and add a real instrument, your voice!

If you are using the newer machines, you will be doing this assignment.

GARAGEBAND SOUNDSCAPES ASSIGNMENT

Learning Goal

Create two musical soundscapes using Garageband Software.

Think of your favourite movie chase scene …. or that scary moment as the murderer stalks his prey …. or the tear-filled reconciliation of the star crossed lovers … bet you are hearing the music that went with it!  What about the soundtrack too?

Music is a powerful cinematic tool, because it hits us at the subconscious level. It grabs your emotions in a way that visuals can’t. You can’t explain why a musical passage gives you a shiver – you just know that it does !!

Obviously, you want to manipulate this to your advantage. For each of the following films, create a soundtrack that tells the story. Avoid the cliches … try to come up with sounds that vividly create the movie in the listener’s imagination.

THE TASK: Choose two of the four short exerts from famous Hollywood films that are in Google Classroom and create a soundscape for them. Make sure all the criteria is present. You will have to download them and insert them 1 at a time into Garageband. When you are done, you will share it with me.

Success CRITERIA: Each soundscape will have the following items:

1) Minimum of three instrumental loops plus one percussion
2) One “live” recorded sound
3) The major events in each scene must be described by distinct sound(s) You decide how the scene ends with your musical choices.
4) The soundscape should be as long as the film is
5) Innovative and accurate representation of events
6) Subtle and sensitive mood changes
7) Let your creativity flow!
